Gurps « Thread Started on Mar 5, 2009, 6:49pm »
H'Okay everyone, This is Noh and I've decided to start up this thread to discuss GURPS. Anyone who knows this system is welcome here, and those that don't are as well. I shall attempt to instruct you in the ways of the General Universal Role Play System
Also: I started up a campaign for a couple of people on skype.
This campaign is loosely set on the 1700 era of the Caribbean Pirate. The key difference in this version of time is that in the early 1600’s a woman named Martha Steward created an alternate unpaid worker to use instead of the barbaric slavery system. This new worker came in the form of the automaton. These machines could be driven by either clockwork (in which case they would have to be wound at least once every eight hours. This winding generally takes about thirty minutes if done by two strong individuals) or steam power (these were simply powered by a constant feeding of their boiler. The automatons could be programmed for simple tasks if one knew how the machine worked and had a specialized card for the device to mechanically read. With this new source of labor came a glut of raw materials being produced with less expense in the Caribbean. This resulted in two things, a sudden need for even more transportation to and from Europe, and more smuggling and ransacking of those transports.
In the already tense political environment it didn’t take long before the various powers that be realized they needed to improve the protection of their ships. This started the trend of iron plated sailing vessels, steam powered ships, sub-water boats, and in the case of the excessively rich Spanish flying steam vessels. Because of all these changes the Privateers became more commonplace.
So, with a new respect for the female mind, and a mechanical bent to technology let us embark.
Things you need a character/character sheet, a dice rolling program or at least one six sided dice, and this file for explanations. There is a .pdf file for a character sheet here http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/img/GURPC.pdf http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=SJG30-6094 is a basic initiation into how GURPS works. If you need any help with anything let me know.
The Articles of Agreement that follow are from fairly late in piracy, 1723. The language is closer to our modern English than those of the previous century. These articles are unmodified, and contain a rare instance of pirates agreeing to flogging as a punishment (Moses's Law means 39 lashes). Compare these Articles to Black Bart's on the next page. "1. Every man shall obey civil command; the captain shall have one full share and a half in all prizes; the master, carpenter, boatswain and gunner shall have one share and quarter. "2. If any man shall offer to run away, or keep any secret from the company, he shall be marooned with one bottle of powder, one bottle of water, one small arm and shot. "3. If any man shall steal any thing in the company, or game, to the value of a piece of eight, he shall be marroon'd or shot. "4. If at any time we should meet another Marrooner that man that shall sign his articles without the consent of our company, shall suffer such punishment as the captain and company shall think fit. "5. That man that shall strike another whilst these articles are in force, shall receive Moses's Law on the bare back. "6. That man that shall snap his arms, or smoke tobacco in the hold, without a cap to his pipe, or carry a candle lighted without a lanthorn, shall suffer the same punishment as in the former article. "7. That man that shall not keep his arms clean, fit for an engagement, or neglect his business, shall be cut off from his share, and suffer such other punishment as the captain and the company shall think fit. "8. If any man shall lose a joint in time of an engagement he shall have 400 pieces
These two files have all the skills/advantages/disadvantages that can be used in this campaign.
Good and Evil, Sane and Insane, Mind and Spirit; these are simply matters of perspective.

Okay then, it's been a loooong while coming but we have everyone's characters done, everyone has been through the demo, and we are now ready to play. So everyone please post a time when you're available and we'll try to get together for swashbucklery with explosions.
I'm going to be disappearing for a while. My brother is going to have the laptop to fix it/add memory to it (finally), so I don't know when I'll be getting it back. Also, I have a funeral to go to next weekend and won't be back til the 20th.
So... yeah... that's the story of my life.
Edited 7-22-09:
So, now I have no more visits from the family, I'm mostly free through the rest of the week, except for a few on calls, but there mostly in the afternoon and I know we like to meet each other at night anyways.
Note to self: Your Initiative bonus is your DEX modifier. Your language is Common, Halfling, and Druidic (deny it if anyone asks). Give UJ a thousand pies because he's just awesome.

So now that we are starting up the DnD campaign again, any word on if this is doable now as well? I have to say that I am still curious about the GURPS system and am on a roleplaying kick lately. XP

Well, I think we can go about it the same way we are doing DnD now. People show up, and if we decide we've got the time and inclination to do it.... there will be gurps.
